Tired of the ever sobbing faces of saas-bahus when you switch on television sets or you just can’t tolerate the fabricated drama that reality shows endorse for the influx of flattering TRPs? The new-age web series that’s spreading like wildfire into many production houses may just be the alternative, you’ve been searching for long.

Take this example where you can’t dismiss the popularity of Man’s World series, a product of Y-films, the youth-aimed sub-division of the Yashraj banner. Well, a fond film lover would call it a modern and subtle reboot of Jamba Lakidi Pamba, late E. V. V. Satyanarayana’s Telugu blockbuster comedy of the 90s.

The four episode series reversed gender roles that men and women play in daily lives and took humorous digs on the dogmas that make society regressive. The plot isn’t fresh, but it’s packaged just right for this generation, with some humour, some aesthetics and some gyaan sprinkled in a feather-light result. Buoyed by this success, the banner is coming up with another web-series, Bang Baaja Baraat, centred on the fun during a wedding that has a bride and a bridegroom of two different communities.

Sujeeth, the director of Run Raja Run, who took the short-film route to feature films too feels it’s high time the web series catches the attention of more filmmakers. “Instead of making short films lasting an hour or more, we should pitch material like a series to fit the bill for an online audience,” he feels.

For those craving for a regional toast, there is another series in the offing, titled Muddapappu Avakai, starring Niharika Konidela, daughter of actor Naga Babu, whose teaser showed impressive glimpses on the theme showcasing the friction between a man and a woman in love. The actress is already working on her film debut. On one front, this is a risky territory to enter, with regard to the outcome it may bring about. On the optimistic side, the familiarity is such a gainer prior to the celluloid, if it does work.

Moreover, the time gap between the airing of each episode will help people notice the director and the credentials of the crew better unlike a short film or any random video, Sujeeth reminds. In fact, the maker was to direct a web series, a suspense-thriller material, which had content lasting three hours but that didn’t take off.

With the democracy the Internet offers, it’s a tough balance the makers need to maintain, lest they overdose on the crassness that AIB Knockout with Ranvir Singh and Arjun Kapoor promoted, but was tough to digest for many. The AIB team now is giving a simultaneous shot at television and the digital audience, On Air with AIB (first aired on Hotstar app).
